a. What is Hands-Free Lifting ?
Personnel not touching a suspended load (with any part of the body) that is connected to a mechanical lifting device is Hands‐free lifting.
That is any load that is being lifted or before the load is properly set down and all potential energy is released.
b. Why Hands-Free Lifting ?
Hands injury represent over 50% of all injuries in the workplace.
Many injuries can be minimised if not eliminated with the use of the safer methods of handling suspended loads and use safer lifting apparatus, work practices and tools.
The objective of hands‐free lifting is to eliminate hand and finger injuries by removing them from the energy source – and avoid all caught between,
struck‐by and struck‐against incidents.
Hands and fingers represent a tool that enables you to do wonderful things with them, and unfortunately there are no spare parts for these if you damage them.

2. IMPACT GLOVES
Gloves are the most common and essential hand safety tools used in the oil and gas industry. They protect workers’ hands from cuts, abrasions, burns, and punctures caused by sharp objects, hot surfaces, and chemicals. Different types of gloves are available for different tasks, such as leather gloves for handling rough or sharp materials, chemical-resistant gloves for working with hazardous substances, and insulated gloves for protection against extreme temperatures.
In oil & gas industry, the impact gloves are broadly classified into four categories.
All work exposed to impact injuries (e.g. daily routine / general purpose work; handling pipe, hand and power tools, and materials with rough surfaces).
• All work exposed to impact injuries and involving, abrasion, cut and puncture risk.
• All work exposed to impact injuries and involving wet / oily condition. Oil based mud application.
• All work that mandates an impact glove but where dexterity tasks is to be performed.
3. TASK SPECIFIC GLOVES
The workplace can create many hazards for your hands, whether from chemicals, cuts, or burns. No single glove can provide appropriate protection for every work situation, so it is important to assess the risk for each task and select a glove that provides specialized protection for the specific task. In any industry, task-specific work gloves can be classified into gloves of the following type based on their application
Chemical – Electrical – Fire – Basic Work – Welding – Cut Resistant – Cryogenic – Inspection – Hot Mill – Mechanics Style Work – Assembly

4. HAND PROTECTION ACCESSORIES
Health effects from Oil Based Drilling Fluid exposure vary depending on the chemical constituents of the drilling fluid. Oil based drilling fluid can cause skin disorders, such as dermatitis. Skin exposure can happen at the Shakers or the drilling floor while performing activities including cleaning, handling the fluid through pumping or mixing, making piping connections, mud tank cleaning, collection of samples or when invert spills occur.
Few products that can help minimize skin problems while working with oil-based muds.
• Barrier Creams
Barrier creams can offer some assistance; however they should not be relied upon to protect the worker from dermatitis or potential skin absorption. Instead they offer secondary protection should the workers skin come into contact with fluids. It is important to note that in order for barrier creams to be effective against oil-based drilling fluids like Invert they must be water based.
• Glove Clips
Glove clip reduces hand injuries by keeping work gloves available to workers at all times and reducing lost glove replacement costs.
