Taglines for Crane Operations: Why Anti-Tangle Design Matters

A tagline is meant to keep the worker away from the load. A conventional rope tagline that tangles, droops, or falls under the load can force the worker back into exactly the position the tagline was supposed to prevent.

What a tagline is supposed to do

Ask a rigging instructor to explain a tagline in one sentence and the answer is usually some version of: a rope attached to a load to allow a worker to control swinging and rotation from a safe distance. Ranger, one of Australia's specialist lifting and rigging suppliers, describes it this way: "a tagline is a rope attached to a load during a lifting operation to allow a rigger to control swinging and/or rotation of a suspended load."

That definition carries an important assumption: that the worker is operating the tagline from a position that actually is safe — outside the exclusion zone, clear of the drop zone, not standing beneath the load.

The definition is sound. The problem is what happens in practice when a conventional rope tagline misbehaves.

What conventional rope taglines do under load

A conventional rope tagline is a length of natural fibre or synthetic rope, typically at least 16 mm in diameter for standard Australian mining and construction applications, attached to the load and allowed to trail free. In calm conditions, on a light load, it functions as intended: the rigger holds the end of the rope and applies tension to control load rotation and swing while keeping clear of the exclusion zone.

In real operating conditions — wind, an unbalanced load, a load that has been rigged with residual twist, or simply a rope that has been stored coiled for a few shifts — a conventional tagline does none of these things cleanly:

  • It hangs vertically beneath the load as the load rises, placing the free end directly under the centre of the suspended load — the most dangerous position for the worker to stand
  • It tangles around itself, around the slings, or around a protruding feature of the load, reducing its effective length and requiring the worker to move closer to the load to retrieve usable line
  • It kinked from storage, lies coiled at the worker's feet, and requires the worker to step toward the load to pick up the slack before any useful tension can be applied
  • In wind, it wraps around the load or the rigging and must be physically retrieved — again from a position near or under the load

The result, in each of these scenarios, is the same: the worker who was supposed to be controlling the load from a safe distance walks toward the load to fix the tagline. They enter the drop zone. They reach under or near the load. The tagline has not eliminated the exposure — it has relocated it slightly and made it less predictable.

Australian Mining magazine documented this problem in a 2014 article on tagline safety in Australian rigging practice: "Frequently the only way to get close enough to a suspended load to get a hold of the tagline is to almost get under the load itself, a practice which is in direct contravention of the rules on any mine site in Australia."

The specific injury mechanism this creates

The hand injury risk from a poorly managed tagline is not primarily the load falling on the worker. It is the sequence of events that leads the worker to be in proximity to the load when something goes wrong — a sudden gust of wind, a crane operator responding to a signal at the wrong moment, a load that shifts as it touches down.

Queensland mining safety data from the Resources Safety and Health Queensland covering the period 2007–12 identified that "hit by moving objects" (19%) and being "trapped between stationary and moving objects" (29%) were among the most common mechanisms of serious hand injury in Queensland mining. A worker standing near a swinging or descending load while trying to retrieve a tagline is exposed to both mechanisms simultaneously.

NSW Resources Regulator Safety Bulletin SB24-04 (July 2024) reported 50 hand and finger injury reports from NSW mining in two years, 12 resulting in serious injuries. While not all of these were tagline-related lifting injuries, the broader pattern they reflect — hands entering the hazard zone during routine tasks — applies directly to the tagline retrieval scenario.

What anti-tangle design actually changes

Anti-tangle taglines are engineered to maintain a consistent, usable shape throughout the lift, so that the worker does not need to reposition to retrieve a fouled or tangled line. The engineering approaches vary by product, but the functional goal is the same: a tagline that stays in a controllable form from the attachment point on the load to the worker's hands at the other end, regardless of how the load moves or where the rope falls.

A well-designed anti-tangle tagline typically incorporates one or more of the following design principles:

  • A rigid or semi-rigid core that prevents the rope from turning on itself and wrapping into a tangle
  • A construction that maintains the tagline's shape even when slack, so it does not collapse into a coil at the worker's feet
  • A surface treatment or braid structure that reduces the tendency for the line to wrap around rigging hardware or load protrusions

The practical result is that the worker can stand at the end of the tagline and maintain useful tension on the load without walking toward it. This is what a tagline is supposed to do. Anti-tangle design makes that possible in conditions where a conventional rope would fail.

The tagline failure mode is a Find The Handâ„¢ moment

PSC's Find The Hand™ approach asks: where does the hand enter the task, and why? Applied to tagline use, the answer is often: the hand enters the line of fire not during the controlled part of the lift, but during tagline retrieval — the moment the rope has fallen under or near the load and the worker needs to recover it before the crane operator can proceed.

This is a task within the task. The planned work is the lift. The unplanned hand exposure is the tagline recovery that happens when the tagline does not behave as expected. Find The Hand™ asks the pre-task question: what will happen to this tagline if it falls, tangles, or droops — and what will the worker do?

  • If the tagline tangles around the load — the worker moves toward the load to unwind it, entering the drop zone
  • If the tagline falls beneath the load — the worker steps under the load to retrieve it, entering the highest-risk zone in the entire lift
  • If the tagline is too short for the lift height — the worker must stand closer to the load than the exclusion zone to maintain any useful tension

Each of these failure modes is predictable. An anti-tangle tagline of adequate length, combined with a policy that the worker does not enter the drop zone to recover a fouled line, addresses the exposure before it becomes an event.

Specifying taglines for Australian mining and rigging operations

Australian practice, as referenced by rigging suppliers including Ranger, specifies that taglines should be at least 16 mm in diameter and made from non-conductive material for standard industrial and mining crane operations. This is a minimum material specification, not a performance specification for anti-tangle behaviour.

When specifying taglines for a site or for a specific lift type, the following considerations go beyond the diameter requirement:

Length

The tagline must be long enough that the worker can hold the free end and remain outside the exclusion zone for the full height of the lift. A tagline that reaches the worker comfortably when the load is at ground level but runs out of length before the load is at full hook height forces the worker to walk toward the load to maintain tension. Length should be specified based on the maximum lift height for the intended application, with margin.

Tangle resistance

For operations where the tagline must trail free during part of the lift — during travel, for example, before the load reaches the landing area — a rope that maintains its shape when slack is significantly safer than one that coils or wraps. This is especially relevant for offshore operations, where deck movement adds an unpredictability that a coiling rope cannot handle safely.

Grip and handling

A tagline operated for an extended lift, or repeatedly throughout a shift, should be comfortable to hold under tension without causing hand fatigue or the need to wrap the line around the hand or arm. Wrapping a tagline around the hand or body is a well-documented hazard in rigging operations — the load movement that is supposed to be controlled by the tagline instead transmits force directly to the wrapped limb.

Attachment points

The tagline should be attached to the load at a point as close to the lateral extremities of the load as possible, so that it provides maximum leverage against rotation. Attachment to the rigging gear itself is generally less effective because the rigging can rotate relative to the load.

Taglines and hands-free lifting policy

A tagline does not make a lift hands-free by itself. A tagline is the first stage in a system of controls that, together, keep the worker's hands away from the load throughout the operation.

The tagline controls rotation and swing during the lift. A push/pull pole controls the final positioning at the landing point. A magnetic positioning tool provides steering control for ferrous steel loads at close range. Each tool addresses a different stage of the lift where the hand would otherwise enter the line of fire.

The tagline is the highest-leverage tool in this system because it is the one that is active for the longest phase of the lift. Getting the tagline selection right — an adequate length, an anti-tangle construction, a material appropriate for the environment — means that the risk of unplanned hand exposure during tagline management is reduced throughout the lift, not just at the landing stage.

A hands-free lifting policy that specifies "use a tagline" without specifying what kind of tagline and how long it should be is leaving the most consequential decision to the person picking up a rope from the nearest rigging bag.
